They say that children have their own guardian angels, this was the case of a baby who was born and buried alive by the mother in Rwamagana district but as odds would have it playing children found the baby and today she has a mother in Nahimana Rehema who lives in Nyakariro.

It was on the 4th of September when children playing outside found a buried baby on the ground of a neighbor in Gishore cell, Nyakaririo sector, Rwamgana district.

It was a challenge to find someone to adopt the baby, but Rehema Nahimana a mother of three accepted to take on the role of mother to the child.

"When I got to the place where the baby was buried, she was dirty and still had the umbilical cord. What I did was clean the baby up and cut off the umbilical cord and that when the officials arrived and we took the baby to the hospital," Nahimana told RBA.

The baby is almost five months now and healthy. Nahimana weaned her 2-year-old and started breastfeeding the young one.

"I saw the baby was not responding to milk so I had to ensure that I breastfeed her, that’s why she is healthy but I give her milk too because I do not have enough breast milk. I thank God because I did not know she will live because she was at a bad state when we found her," Nahimana added.

We found the baby with bandages a thing the mother said was caused by the injuries the baby incurred when she was strangled at birth.  Rehema has now named the baby. Uwumugisha Firdaus meaning the 7th heaven.

Neighbors applaud Rehema for her act of kindness .

Claudine Umumararungu said; "This mother came and I said the baby still has the umbilical cord, someone cut it, others feared but she came and did it quickly and held the baby,"

"Everyone refused to touch her but she (Nahimana) did and helped her because of her kind heart," Muhende Schadrack talking about Nahimana.

Neighbours also called on well-wishers to help Rehema raise the baby and her children.

Sector level officials condemned the act of burying the baby and called on whoever has issues of raising their children to talk to the authorities.

Executive Secretary of Nyakariro Sector, Muhigirwa David, said; "When one is faced with such decisions, it is important that they come and talk to the authorities. We are working closely with Rehema to help her. we applaud her and call on Rwandans to have a heart of kindness,"

Psychologists say that Rehema's act of kindness will ensure that the baby has no repercussions mentally as she will grow up in a loving family.

The perpetrator of the heinous act is now under police custody.
