We grieve with the People of Kenya - President Kagame at Moi’s Funeral

This Tuesday, President Paul Kagame joined the Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and Heads of State of Djibouti, Saharawi, South Sudan, Uganda and the President of Ethiopia at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi for the State Funeral Service of the late Second President of Kenya, Daniel Arap Moi.

Former Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi, the country's longest-serving leader, died aged 95 on Tuesday, February 4.

In his eulogy, President Kagame said that the passing on of the late President Moi, who he described as a gallant leader, is a loss not only to his family and country but a loss shared by the people of Rwanda.

“We are here indeed based upon the friendship between the people of Kenya and the people of Rwanda and between the leadership teams of both countries to condole with you President, the family of late Daniel Arap Moi, and the people of Kenya,” President Kagame said.

He added, “When the people of Kenya are grieving, it goes as far as our country and our people join you in the grieving. And if Kenyans succeed and make progress we also share in that. We will continue to be with you as we all remember this gallant leader, one of the gallant leaders of this great country of Kenya, and May God accord him eternal peace,”

The death of Moi, who ruled Kenya from 1978 to 2002, was announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta in a statement on Tuesday.

Moi passed on at the Nairobi Hospital on the early morning of this 4th February, 2020, in the presence of his family, according to the statement.

Kenyatta ordered a period of national mourning until a state funeral is held.

Moi had been in hospital for more than a month.
