In 2019, a mother of two was killed in a mining accident leaving behind two daughters with their Grandmother, Emerance Mukandamage, who received Rwf 1 Million as compensation from the now defunct mining company which closed shop due to financial hardships caused by COVID-19 pandemic.
Mukandamage, a resident of Rwamagana District in Eastern Rwanda says the compensation could have been better if mining companies cared enough to insure their employees.
Rwandan miners are asking their employers to make sure that they have comprehensive insurance that can help them in case occupational hazards hit.
